DNS question

Mike

Our DNS is handled by our ISP, so my client machines
(approx. 50 Win2k Pro.) are all pointing to an external
DNS Server. Now... upgrading to AD where DNS will be
local, what type of problems will occur if my clients are
still pointing to the external DNS server and not the
local Win2k DNS Servers?
TIA,
Mike

Your AD clients MUST point to the DNS server set up for AD. If not group
policy will not work, logins will take forever, you will not be able to join
new computers to the domain, basically if your AD clients are not pointing
to the DNS server that MUST be set up for the AD domain, your AD domain will
not work.

Point the AD DNS server to itself for DNS, point all AD clients to the AD
DNS server ONLY. Configure your AD DNS server to forward requests and list
your ISP's DNS server as the forwarder.

Mike,

As Danny stated, you need to point all of your internal clients to the
internal DNS server. The only place for any external DNS Server information
would be in the Forwarders tab in your internal DNS.

This is a big change from the way things were done in WINNT 4.0 where WINS
was king.

Cary
