DNS problem

I am trying to troubleshoot why I cannot access the internet from my
wireless router at home. Our wireless router is set up for dhcp. Using

1. All of the other computers can access the internet.

2. ipconfig /all reports everything is working properly including;
an address has been assigned from dhcp,
the gateway has been properly defined
the gateway address has also been assigned the address of the dns
server.

I can access sites through the connection using ip addresses, but dns is not
working on this computer. (It is on the other computers with the exact same
configuration.)


Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also - Click Start, Run (Type) Services.Msc [Enter]
Verify the DNS service is set to Automatic and currently started.

which is the same address for the gateway.

I'd look to a HOSTS redirection issue or maybe a browser issue.
If IE, ( & Version 7 ) I would use the Reset function to set all the
browser settings/options back to default. Might also help to do a
IPConfig / FlushDNS
from a command prompt window.

Without success. I am currently resetting IE ver 7

I'd look to a HOSTS redirection issue or maybe a browser issue.
If IE, ( & Version 7 ) I would use the Reset function to set all the
browser settings/options back to default. Might also help to do a
IPConfig / FlushDNS
from a command prompt window.

My next step is to delete IE 7

I removed IE7, and still no success. I am no running IE 6, but with no
success so far.

I am out of ideas.

One last suggestion, download an alternate browser such as Opera
9.24 and see if it will load pages properly - if not then it's some other
area such as a Security software program....

After running a diagnostic, I got the following error:
Error attempting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2
What is this all about?

If you haven't already, you might have to use the Network Wizard to set up
the computer to use the network. Different operating systems do this
differently. Older OSes won't have the wizard. You'll have to set up a TCP/IP
connection in the network properties dialog box. XP will usually detect the
network and auto configure itself, but sometimes you have to use the wizard.
Vista... let's not go there. Vista and XP computers have been known to fight
with each other on computer to computer direct ethernet connections, and may
do that through a router too, so it is one more thing to keep in mind. Try
downloading a registry repair program and see if that helps. Here is a tool
that will give you a visual representation of the network and any problems
http://www.pingplotter.com/. I don't know that it will help but it is kind of
a cool idea. Start>run>netsh diag gui is another possibility if you haven't
tried it already. I'm willing to bet you have a torrent or other Peer to Peer
program installed. They are notorious for creating a problem like what you
describe especially with older NICs. Restart the computer WITHOUT THE P2P
PROGRAM and that is very likely to solve the problem. I hate to be the one to
tell you this, but the NIC might also be dead. They tend to die a few (well a
lot of) ports at a time, but there are a few ports that hang on and allow you
to ping other computers or something. Try pinging the computer that isn't
working from one that is. If that doesn't work and there's not a problem with
the physical connection to the network, then its a potentially bad sign.
