This can easily happen with your ISP's DNS in your NIC. especially since it
is in the preferred posistion. ISP's DNS should not be in the NIC, in any
posistion.

Thanks guys for your fast reply, one problem though I don't know how to do
any of this. It has taken me several weeks to get this far. I am lost right
now help files don't really give you the step by step, the server has been
reloaded many times as when I try something it gets so messed up I start all
over, so please give me some steps to do. Send them email if you prefer to
not load this news group up. One last thing if I don't put ISP DNS in I
don't get on the net and the server will have to do that also but I left it
off in hopes that would help the connection problem. When I tried to join
the domain with NOX client I lost all my desktop and had to restore it to
get it all back, I have years of stuff on this unit I can't afford to loose.

This can easily happen with your ISP's DNS in your NIC. especially since it
is in the preferred posistion. ISP's DNS should not be in the NIC, in any
posistion.

: Thanks guys for your fast reply, one problem though I don't know how

: am lost right now help files don't really give you the step by step,
: the server has been reloaded many times as when I try something it
: gets so messed up I start all over, so please give me some steps to
: do. Send them email if you prefer to not load this news group up. One
: last thing if I don't put ISP DNS in I don't get on the net and the
: server will have to do that also but I left it off in hopes that

: all back, I have years of stuff on this unit I can't afford to loose.

If your local DNS cannot resolve internet names it is usually because it has
a "." forward lookup zone. One way to find out is to go to the property
sheet of the DNS server using the DNS console. On the Forwarders tab put
your ISP's DNS in, that is the only reference to your ISP's DNS anywhere on
your network. DO NOT USE ISP's DNS anywhere else. If the Forwarders is
grayed out then you have the Root Zone (the ".") Open forward lookup zones
and DELETE the zone. Then refresh the console (or close the console and
reopen it) then you can enable the forwarder to your ISP.
Forwarders are not required, just recommended, but if the "." zone exists
you have to choices, delete it, or delegate all TLD's in it. It is much
easier to delete, it will work almost as well. Delegating the Root zone is
better because your DNS server would not have to go to the ICANN roots to
find the name servers for the TLD you are looking for. You can also use a
different root if you delegated it, personally I use the ORSC Root because
it has many, many more TLDs available. (Important if you have a public mail
server)
The only problem with using the ORSC root is when the ICANN root decides to
add a TLD that is already in use on the ORSC Root. The most notorious of
these was the .biz TLD, which had been in use for a long time in the ORSC
Root before it was implemented in the ICANN Root. The problem arose because
ICANN decided in their own wisdom that they would assign different
Authoritative gTLD servers that conflicted with the ORSC gTLD servers
basically making the .biz TLD in the ORSC Root useless and delegitimated all
of the many already owned .biz domains in the ORSC Root.

I keep a watch on that, for now, I don't think ICANN has any intentions in
the near future of doing that again. But beware, since the ICANN Root is run
by the government, you may have to write letters and make phone calls if
ICANN decides to add another conflicting TLD by make different gTLD servers
authoritative over the name.
What I would like to see is for ICANN to adopt the ORSC Root as the Official
Root. Hmm, do you think? LOL Naaaa, I think there is a bigger chance of the
Democrats getting rid of the income tax. ROFL
What am I saying! ROFLMAO

I guess always have been somewhat of a rebel, I guess it's in my Texan
blood.

Well I tried that as you suggested and still won't find internet. Before the
lost MB it had DNS of isp in there and everything worked, it went on the net
and everybody logged on ok. The XPp machine logged on, on boot and
everything was peachy. What nest ??

What have you tried?

I made several suggestion did DNS have a "." forward lookup zone?

What forward lookup zones do you have?

Look on the Root hints tab to see if the Root hint servers have IP
addresses.

Have you looked at this article?
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300202
That article will help you with deleting the Root zone (the dot ".") and
show you how to configure the forwarder that Kevin mentioned in his previous
post.

For a forwarder, it maybe that your ISP's DNS does not allow forwarding.
Some ISPs do block this. You can use this server as a reliable Forwarder in
your forwarding tab:
4.2.2.2

Also, can you post an updated ipconfig /all from those machines you
previously posted please to confirm your progress? That would help us to
insure progress and no other errors that may be present, for peace of mind.

And what Kevin said, in an AD environment, you CANNOT use your ISP's DNS
addresses any where other than in your forrwarders. I understand that;s how
you previously had it before your mobo went out, but I bet that other errors
were probably coming up that you didn't notice due to this. It is imperative
that you do not use them.

Besides what Kevin asked you, can you also let us know if you can:
ping www.yahoo.com

ping 4.2.2.2

nslookup www.yahoo.com

Can you post those results, what IP you were using as a forwader, and the
updated ipconfigs too?

Really appreciate it and hopefully between one of us out here we'll figure
out what's going on.

Hope This Helps
============================

I agree the default gateway on the first machine being 192.168.1.107 is
totally wrong and needs to be changed to 192.168.1.1.

But more importantly, the ONLY DNS server that should have shown up is
192.168.1.107 on both machines and NOT those ISP addresses:
That would be inviting trouble. The whole problem on that box appears to be
the incorrect gate to the outside world.

Look, the nslookup messages (they are NOT errors) are just messages saying
it cannot find the name of your DNS server in your reverse zone, probably
because you don't have a reverse zone. Create one and make sure there's a
PTR for the DNS server, otherwise ignore the message and nslookup will still
work on subsequent commands.

As for the Event ID 15 & 1054, they usually mean that you are not using your
internal DNS (the ISP thing again). But if you are and still getting this
message, then it means that the SRV records are either incorrect or didn't
get registered properly.

So Nox, do the SRV records exist under your "main.no-x-qus.com" zone?

He may not have flushed the DNS resolver cache, he would have to to this
because when he was pointing to ISP's DNS it would have negative answers
cached.
These events can also happen if the MS Client and File Sharing bindings are
wrong or not bound or if the machine does not have permissions to access.
he should try this in his browser
\\main.no-x-qus.com\SYSVOL\main.no-x-qus.com\policies to see if he gets
access denied or host not found.

Did you create the reverse zone properly?
Did you create a PTR for the DNS server IP in the reverse zone?
