DNS or LMHOST ?

Didier Ribbens

Hi,

We made some network in a school (children 6 - 13 years), this work perfect
but......
we would like to filter out ONLY the CLEAN sites.
Do one of you know if it exist a DNS server address with ONLY CLEAN sites ?

The way I did it was to disable the DNS on all computers and put a list of
allowed sites in the LMHOST file :
ex:

62.212.82.133 nuspelen #PRE
192.130.131.39 telenet #PRE

etc.

If one of you have a good and not too expensive idea , you are welcome ;)

Best Regards,
Didier.

As they have told you the right way to do this with a tool like a
Proxy server that can control access through DNS names and/or
IP address.

Kevin gave you some names -- ISA, Microsoft's add-on proxy
server is excellent for this but a bit tricky (read: irritating) to
configure
and costs extra.

Another good choice, with or without ISA, is Privoxy. It's free and
can offer a variety of controls targeted at the idea of preventing ALL
or just some types of material from a site. For instance you can have
it only load text from a suspicious site but avoid graphics or avoid
scripting or other odd combinations.

Privoxy is available on SourceForge.com I believe -- otherwise just
search for the name. Privoxy.org or .net I think.

Try using a access control which is ten times cheaper than
ISA which is called SURF CONTROL

ISA and SurfControl do not entirely compare. So, if we are comparing prices,
it'd be prudent to note that ISA does MORE than SurfControl.

If you have read my message to which you would respond, I
discussed largely Privoxy which is FREE and so infinitely cheaper
than any purchased price but even that may not make it the best
choice in a particular situation.
