DNS issues for machines with DHCP reservations.

We are running MS DNS in AD integrated mode. We have
some printers and Unix boxes that we have setup DHCP
reservations for. Sometimes when one of these printers
or Unix boxes is rebooted the DNS entry is lost? Anyone
have any clue? This does not happen every time and
usually a second boot will bring the entry back. The DNS
tab in DHCP is setup as follows.

Enable DNS dynamic updates is turned on.
Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records is
selected.

Discard A and PTR records when lease expires is selected.

Dynamically update DNS for clients that do not request is
selected.

Please help!

Just want to clarify one thing and establish that your router isn't offering
DHCP as well? This comes up once in awhile when someone has a Linksys or
Netgear or such, and is running DHCP on it and it will conflict. One way to
tell, if you're not sure, is to find out who the DHCP server is that gave it
config when you get the wrong settings.

Other than that, how long is your lease?
Options set as a Scope or Server Level?
Win2k or Win2k3? What SP level?
Maybe a netmon capture to determine what's going on may help.

What are the DNS servers listed in TCP/IP properties on the DHCP server?

DHCP sends the updates to the DNS servers configured in TCP/IP properties
for network connections active on the server DHCP service is on.

The DHCP/DNS Server is a fully patched Win 2K SP4 box. There are no
other DHCP servers on the network. options are set at the server
level except the gateway which is set at the scope level. Lease is
the default 8 days. It's weird, because the client gets an IP and
all of the correct settings, but the DNS A record disappears. This
will occur raraly since there are typically months between reboots of
the client.

Interesting. The only other thing is Kevin's latest question about what DNS
servers is the DHCP server itself using?
