DNS failure

Rowland Costin

Hi

I have a small network consisting of a Terminal server and 2 domain
controllers, running under Windows Server 2k3 R2

The hard disks failed on the Primary domain controller PDC. (I know its not
really a primary any more) however, this was running the Primary DNS as
well, with replication to the Alternate DNS on the BDC.

Anyway, the raid has been rebuilt and Windows installed by the hosting
company (These 3 servers are all in cyberspace). However, despite them
setting it up originally, they won't touch the server set up, (The guy who
did it left and now I think they don't know anything)

So, I need to join this server into the Domain, This means installing active
directory, which fails with the message:

"The wizard cannot gain access to the list of domains in the Forest. This
condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem." "The error is RPC server
is unavailable"

Is this really a DNS issue or something else. I have no idea how to tell if
My attempts at setting up the DNS on this server is correct or not. On this
server I have marked server 245 (the BDC) as the Primary DNS with this
server 235 (PDC) as the alternate as I know that the 245 servers DNS is
still ok. Is there any way for me to synchronise the two DNS servers?

Help, I'm not sure what to do first.

Thanks
Rowland

Did you seize the any FSMO roles held by the failed DC to the remaining DC?
