Thanx again for any help on this one.

Right after this post, my server syarted having troubles
again. I am not able to get into Active Directory at all.
The message is:Naming information could not be located
beacause: The specified doamin does not exist or could not
be contacted.

The last time that happened I had to re-load the server
adn that was only 1 1/2 weeks ago. Any one have any
ideas?

Not sure right off the bat without additional information. So far the first
thing I see is that you have a single label domain name. Not good, unless
you just munged the name for this post.

If you can supply:

1. ipconfig /all from this machine
2. The exact Event log error #
3. The exact spelling of AD's DNS domain name (as it shows up in your ADUC).
4. ipconfig /all from a client machine (to match and confirm your network's
overall configuration in relation to your DCs).
5. The exact spelling of the zone name in DNS and if dynamic updates are
enabled on that zone.

Otherwise it comes down to guessing.

This is the DC, correct?
It is very important for an Active Directory domain to have it's own DNS
server and it is recommended for it to be on the Domain Controller.
It is also recommended that its zone allow dynamic updates, can you clarify
what DNS server this DC is using?
It is certainly not the DNS server listed in TCP/IP nor is it the one noted
near the bottom of your post.
Change the DC and its clients to use this DC for DNS, then restart the
netlogon service on the DC and run ipconfig /registerdns. This will create
its SRV records and register its addresses and should clear this up.
Additionally if the DNS has a " . " Forward Lookup Zone, delete it.

Thanks for posting that info. Follow Kevin's recommendations, assuming that
the DC is running DNS.

Curious, what is 10.0.20.100 anyway? Its on a totally different subnet. Is
it the DNS server for your institution? If DNS is on 10.11.40.100, and the
zone is configured for your domain name (Albuquerque.webster.edu), then if
you're pointing to 10.0.20.100, the data will never get registered. You need
to use this, as Kevin mentioned.

If for any reason you need to use 10.0.20.10, configure a forwarder to it.
If it also hosts Albuquerque.webster.edu, then forwarding for that name
won;'t work. You'll need to manually create records on your DNS for
resources such as www, ftp, etc.

Also curious, I understand that you cant get into ADUC (because in your
zone, the SRV folders are missing), but when you installed AD, what DNS
Domain name did you choose? If not sure, you can always use ADSI Edit to
find out.

**UPDATE**

I had to reinstall the Win2k server OS and I ma now up and
running again.
I changed the Dynamic updates option.
I have to use the DNS IP of 10.0.20.100 so I can connect
to a server in St. Louis (the main Webster campus).
When I change the DSN IP to 10.11.40.101 I loose all
internet connectivity.
Here is my question: How do I get the DSN to work using
the IP of 10.0.20.100?

My info again:
Server IP: 10.11.40.100
Subnet: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: 10.11.40.1
We are on a VPN.

I am rather dumb to the DNS stuff if ya can't tell. I
appreciate any help.
Thanx,

Terry

PS I figure I have about 1 week before the AD shuts down
again...but I can reload if that does occure.

Why would you want to use 10.0.20.100? Is that a Domain Controller in the
same domain as the one you are looking at?
If that is another domain, you probably would not want to use it for DNS
anyway, you would just pull a secondary copy of its zones to your local DNS
and send a secondary copy of your zones to its DNS.

If 10.11.40.100 is a DC, it needs to use the DNS for its own domain, usually
DNS is installed on the DC so you need to use its own address for DNS.

**UPDATE**

I don't believe a reinstall was the answer here.

I changed the Dynamic updates option.
I have to use the DNS IP of 10.0.20.100 so I can connect

You cannot. AD won't work, assuming I understand what your scenario is. That
DNS probably is not allowing updates and/or the zone for you AD DNS domain
name hass not been created on it.

ONLY USE 10.11.40.100.

When I change the DSN IP to 10.11.40.101 I loose all
internet connectivity.

What DNS server is 10.11.40.101 ??
I think in your other post (in another thread you started) says this machine
is only a client machine called "Madeline" or something like that. Is that
running DNS too?
Here is my question: How do I get the DSN to work using
the IP of 10.0.20.100?

As I said previously, if that DNS is not allowing updates and/or the zone
for you AD DNS domain name hass not been created on it, then there's no way
you can use it. Just use your own, 10.11.40.100, then in DNS properties,
forwarding tab, set 10.0.20.100 as a forwarder.
My info again:
Server IP: 10.11.40.100
Subnet: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: 10.11.40.1
We are on a VPN.

What sort of VPN?? Is it established between your router and their router
(assuming St. Louis) which connects your two locations transparently or is
it physically created on your server as a VPN client?

If between routers, then there's nothing to worry about. Try what I
suggested with the forwarder.
I am rather dumb to the DNS stuff if ya can't tell. I
appreciate any help.

DNS is actually easy once you learn it. Just takes time messing with it.

Terry
