Hi everybody,

I´m in big troubles right now. I work as Windows Technical Support and
I have a problem that I´ve never had experience before.
I have one computer with Windows XP Pro SP2 connected directly to the
internet and configured to share it internet connection to the others
computers on the local network.
For any other machine on the local network with adresses 192.168.0.x as
IP and with gateway 192.168.0.1 (the machine with Win XP Pro SP2 I told you
before) I can´t connect to the internet.
What is new in that network configuration? I have installed Windows XP
Service Pack 2 on the 192.168.0.1 machine (the one that is connected
directly to the internet). Before that all machines had internet conection
and everthing worked ok but since I install SP2 I have problems.
I will give you one more important detail about my configuration so you
can imagine my problem better. On the 192.168.0.1 machine I have Zone Alarm
Security Suite installed. I tried turn off , turn on, disable security
center service, combine all posibilities so the others machines on the local
network are connected to the internet but nothing is working.
If anyone or everyone :) can help I would be happy.
I´ve been all night looking for a solution and i find out some things
that may be important. I just realized that the problem was not on the
internet connection. Is on the DNS. If I do a ping to (or via IE write
http://ip_of_yahoo/)... for example.. the ip of www.yahoo.com I get a
response but if I try with www.yahoo.com I didn´t. So.. the problem is on
the DNS configuration.
I have configured that DNS is automatically configured when the machine
start up and I gets 192.168.0.1 (Computer #1, the one that is connected
directly to the internet and that is sharing the connection to the others
machine)
But it doesn´t work. The problem I know is on the server because I
connect others computers to the same network and all of those computers have
the same problem.
I´m copying also the "IPConfig /all" of both the server and one client
so you can see more details of the problems.

These steps might solve the problem:

1. Disable ICS on the host machine and then re-enable it.

2. Some versions of ZoneAlarm are incompatible with ICS. Un-install
(don't just disable) ZoneAlarm on the host machine. Enable the
Windows Firewall to protect the network from access by other Internet
users.

Thanks for the answer
I will tell you the bad results I have:
1) I disable and enable ICS and the same problem is again.
2) Imposible uninstall Zone Alarm and trust in Windows Firewall. It sounds
funny, I can´t trust on Microsoft producs. Im closer to reinstall windows
without SP2 than to Uninstall a serious product like Zone Alarm.
I'm asking myself. Why when I installed a Microsoft product others product
can´t work or work uncorrectly? A software that generate those kind of
errors are unusable.
I hope you could give me another help and please forgive me if I said
something that sound bad but I´m so angry about this that it´s making me
crazy.
Bye for now.

Fernando

You are blaming the wrong vendor - ZA chose to make their Firewall
incompatible with ICS, not MS making ICS incompatible with ZA. If you have
broadband, and channeling all your PC's through one PC with ICS, may I
suggest obtaining a cheap router to connect to your broadband modem. Then
you can do away with ICS, and install ZA on all PC's - you'll have the best
of both worlds - it would be like having your cake and eating it too!

If you are given the solution to your problem and refuse to do it then dont
keep asking for help. Uninstalling ZA is a valid fix to your problem. ICS
does not work with all versions of ZA. I have also seen times when
uninstalling zone alarm, getting your network to work and then reinstalling
ZA sometimes works, but not very often.

Also I have never personally seen ICS work with a USB modem, which it looks
like you have. You can also try using another Internet Sharing Proxy Server
such as the ones below. They might work with ZA better, and maybe not......

Check out some of these programs:

2. Winroute Firewall- http://www.deerfield.com/products/winroute-firewall/

Robert.....

Thanks for the answer but....
The Wrong Vendor??? Whats??? The only thing I know is that, before I install
SP2 of Windows XP everything works OK and after installing nothing works.
So the problem is clear: SP2.
I mean, I didn´t change the configuration of ZA, instead I change the
configuracion of Windows installing SP2 so i don´t understand why you say
the problem is on ZA????

Fernando

If you are given the solution to your problem and refuse to do it then
dont
keep asking for help.

I did not refuse to do it. I try to solve the problem doing one of the
posible solutions Steve propose me and it didn´t work. The second solution I
refuse it because I can´t do it.
Uninstalling ZA is a valid fix to your problem.

Of course is a valid fix but is not the fix I was looking for. There are
several things that make "uninstalling ZA not possible". If you want I tell
you some of them, like we need a good firewall and a good antivirus, both
easy to use and not heavy when it's loaded in memory, and ZA is the Better
choice.
ICS does not work with all versions of ZA.

So... I installed SP2 and this change ICS, so the problem is not in ZA, the
problem is not in ICS. I mean allmost all ICS work with ZA. Only the ICS SP2
version don't work.
I have also seen times when uninstalling zone alarm, getting your network
to work and then > reinstalling ZA sometimes works, but not very often.

Thanks for the help in that. I will try on this, Maybe I can solve my
problem doing that.
Also I have never personally seen ICS work with a USB modem, which it
looks like you have.

In Argentina, the bigger ADSL seller provide user with USB modem, even
though you can´t believe it. I know it's horrible having USB modem but... it
used to work before SP2 installation.
You can also try using another Internet Sharing Proxy Server such as the
ones below. They might work with ZA better, and maybe not......

Check out some of these programs:

1. Wingate- http://www.wingate.com

2. Winroute Firewall-
http://www.deerfield.com/products/winroute-firewall/

3. WinProxy- http://www.winproxy.com/index.asp

4. PPPShar- http://www.pppindia.com/intl/pppshar/

5. CCProxy- http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/

6. EzProxy-
http://www.lavasoftware.net/en/content/ezproxy/overview.htm?AfID=12353

7. Analogx Proxy-
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Thanks for that. I will also try with this.

I want to say something more. I really say THANKS to you and to steve that
answer me last night, because you try to help on my problem and because you
have spend time on replying me. I really thanks both of you. But I want that
you understand my problem and imagine you have the same problem and just
think how do you feel with that problem.
I don't refuse to the solutions you provide, it's just some of them can not
be executed.
I also apoligize for my english, I´m a spanish speaker and I think I´m not a
good english writer but the best group all over the world in Windows Problem
is this, and you (the guys who answer my question and questions for any
other guy all over the world) are also the best.
Thanks again and again.
