DMA Problems

R

Russ MArtinson

I no longer have the ability to run my two DMA Capable
Maxtor HD's in DMA mode. Prior to installing WINXP the
drives did run in UDMA Mode under Win98Se. Matter of fact
since this is a DUAL BOOT system if I boot into WIN98 the
Maxtor Drives do run as UDMA 33 devices. I am unable to
go into the WINXP Hardware manager and make any changes.
All of the choices for DMA are greyed out.

I am running an ABIT BH6mb with an Intel 440Bx chip set,
356m+ memory. Win XP home is at SP1 with all follow on
updates installed.

I have been unable to find any applicable Knowledge Base
Articles. I have been to the intel site and don't find
any updated drivers for the 440bx chip set. Any thoughts
here about where to go???

Thanks,

Russ Martinson

Use the proper cable; it has three different colored connectors;

blue - motherboard
black - master
gray - slave

Update the BIOS for your motherboard. Be sure to read the instructions very
carefully and follow them exactly. If you don't you could render your
motherboard useless. With a motherboard as ancient as yours, I think you
will not get the performance the drives are capable of even when everything
is fixed. Perhaps you should save and get a more modern motherboard and
processor.
