Another DMA Problem (question)

Howdy folks,

someone gave me a ~2001 vinage Gateway PC, (k-6 500 MHz).

Phoenix BIOS
256 mb ram
cd-rom and new HP 740i w/lightscribe (second ide channel)
hdds: 10 gb Samsung, 20 gb Quantum. both NTFS (primary ide channel)
Windows XP home

Question,

20 gb is master, 10 gb slave.

all four drives are set to auto in bios.

The cd and dvd drives report ultra dma 2 in device manager.

The hdd's both default to multi-word dma 2 in device manager.

both hd drives are udma 2 compliant (verified).

Swapped cables (40 wire) no difference.

Why can't I get the faster udma 2 for the hdd's?????

Please HEP!!!!

The cable should be 80 wire not 40. Not sure if thats a typo on your part.
Take each drive out and see if each drive on there own has udma enabled. Try
each hard drive in another computer to see if udma can be enabled. Depending
on what you find you should be able to determine where the fault is. I know
if there are a certain number of crc errors detected windows will default to
pio but you say multiword dma is enabled so I dont think that applies to
you. Do you have another drive to put in the computer to see if its the
computer.

Here's a web site that will help explain how to re-enable dma if its
relevent in your case.

Hey Glen,

I did read that 40 wire is ok for udma2.

Anyway i am getting udma2 over 40 wire for my second channel already.

No external settings on drives or jumpers other than ms sl and cs as
usual.

I'll check out the link.

Regars,

Al.

Your vintage PC was probably manufactured before the ATA 100 (DMA 4) specs
were developed. If this is the case, you will need to connect your hard
drives to an add-in ATA 100 controller card to obtain speeds faster than ATA
66 (DMA 2)

Only version of ATA that could use original 40 wire ide ribbon cable is
ATA33. ATA66 and faster require 80 wire cable.

Hello Richard.

Tanks for your response. I would like to achieve udma2 (ata33) only.

Now the hdd's are getting multi word (6 ms/sec) while the cd and dvd
are getting udma2. How do I get the hdd's to recognize udma2???

Regards,

Al

Yep, i'm cool with that.. but now I'm getting 16 on the hdd's instead
of 33. HEP.

What speeds do the drives support? Please see the HD manufacturers web
site for complete documentation.
