Today I installed DivX for Windows (ver 6.4) and my XP SP2 wouldn't boot. I
had to boot into the safe mode, uninstall DivX and restore back to a
previous point. Then, everything seemed normal. I re-installed DivX and the
same hell happened. I downloaded DivX from divx.com, so the files should be
free from corruption. Any idea what might have caused the problem? I don't
have anything unusal installed in my system (P4 2.8GHz on Intel D875
Motherboard).

Install the latest version 9.0c

Or install the latest Trojan Zlob and get right to the point ...

I just recently downloaded the latest DivX free package 6.4 and I thought
that I might have been cheated by not getting 9.0c. ;-) Then it occurred
to me what 9.0c was probably referring to.

Does DivX Pro come with this crap; DivXsm.exe and
DivXCodecUpdateChecker.exe??

I deleted those babies and a couple of registry entries related to them.

DivXCodecUpdateChecker.exe = DivX codec Update Checker. Provides anonymous
detection of newer versions of the DivX codec, which may improve DivX
playback and creation on your PC.

DivXsm.exe = DivX settings manager. DivX Toolbar shows up in the
Notification area when you play a DivX file. Note: If you turn the Toolbar
off, you will not be able to control the advanced features of DivX Media
files in third-party media players, and the DivX video decoder may run with
default settings.

Did someone from RealPlayer or QuickTime move over to DivX?

Try downloading from DivX again and reinstalling.

For many reasons, sometimes a download can get corrupted.
