Distribution list versus contact entries

I submitted this question in the wrong area. Now I have another one. Both
are related to the Outlook Distribution list and how that list interacts with
entries in the contact folder.
1) When I add a new entry to a distribution list, I only add the email and
name. How do i get this added to my contacts?
2) I have a large number of entries in a distribution list. Almost all were
added from existing entries in the contact list. Today, I noticed what seems
to be a new problem. When I double-click on an entry in the DL, I get the
message "could not find contact XXXXXXX. It may have been deleted......... I
have no idea what is going on. The contact XXXXX still clearly shows up in
the address book.

1. you need to add them to contacts
2. did you move the contacts? Import them? Something happened to break the
link between the contact and the DL.

I'm not sure what happened. But it seems that if I open the distribution list
and then click on the "update" button, it re-establishes the links.
What is very strange is that when I perform this action, some but not all of
the icons in the left column change appearance from including a "face" to no
face, just "data". Not all of the icons change, but I can't seem to notice
anything different about the ones with and without "faces". As soon as I do
the update, all entries appear in my contacts address book list.
Do you have any documentation on the significance of these icons?

the face icon means its linked to a contact, the rolodex card icon means its
not linked to a contact. The ones with the card icon will resolve to
contacts if you double click to open - but something is not perfectly
matched (like the display name) so it doesn't display the face icon.
