I had an identical experience on a completely different platform
(IBM laptop, Win2K, s-video). A work-around for me was to launch
an application and start playing a video, then stop the playback,
but leave the application running in the background. Then try
to play the video that is giving you problems. For instance,
I would use RealPlayer to start a video clip, and then pause and
minimize it. Then I would play to desired clip in Windows Media
Player. Don't know why it worked. YMMV.
