Displaying/Hiding User Accounts

How do we mark user accounts in order to hide or display them on the welcome
screen? For example :

FIRST, how do we mark the default "Administrator" account so that it will
SHOW UP on the initial welcome screen?

SECOND, how do we hide an administrative user account so that it does NOT
SHOW UP on the welcome screen, but remains active so that it can be accessed
over the internet or network for administrative purposes?

Thank you for any help on this issue.

Hi,

One way is to remove the Welcome screen and require users to press
Ctrl+Alt+Del to log on.

Go to Start - Run and type the following command then press enter:

control userpasswords2

On the Users tab, make sure “Users must enter a user name and password to
enter this computer” is checked.
On the Advanced tab Make sure "Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Del " is checked.

Also if Tweakui is installed, go to Logon - Autologon and make sure
"Log on automatically at system startup" is unchecked.

Do you have XP Home or Pro? In XP Home the administrator account can only be
accessed from safe mode.

You can use the classic logon screen and no users will show up. Users will
have to type in their user name and password.

To hide an account from the Welcome screen you have to use a registry fix.
Be very careful with this as it is possible to lock yourself out of the
computer.

Thanks, Bert, but am I to infer from this answer that the administrator
cannot hide and unhide user names from the standard Welcome screen?

Thanks for the reply, Kerry. In response to your question, we are using
both XP Home and XP Pro, depending on the computer. So, from your response,
are we to assume there is no safe way, other than a registry fix, to
hide/unhide user names on the standard 'Welcome' screen? No PowerToys for
safely hiding or displaying user names? If we do edit a registry entry to
hide a name, can the name still be used from a remote site in order to
access the local computer by using the hidden local user name?

Thanks

The only way I know of is with the registry fix. I've never actually tried
it but I don't see any reason why the account wouldn't log on remotely. If
you want to restrict an account from logging on locally you can use local or
group policy. Set the Deny logon locally policy for the user and also Allow
logon through terminal services.

This won't hide the account but it will stop people from using the account
except by remote. Possibly a combination of the registry fix and these
policies will do what you want.

Thanks, Bert. This makes a lot more sense than dancing with the registry!
