Display with mouse pointing at icon

Somehow I have changed the setting on the desktop and
folder viewing so that when the mouse pointer is over an
icon the pointer changes to a little hand with the
forefinger out and the icon (or file name is selected)

If I leave the pointer over a shortcut for a few seconds
it selects the file as if it has been clicked.

The computer is a Compaq nx9005 laptop

How do I turn this off?

Paul,
If i understand your question properly, i think you are using the Single
click mode, and you want to change to the double click mode. To do so,
click tools>Folder options in any explorer window and on the general tab,
select "Double click to open an item (single click to select)" under Click
items as follows.
