display settings error

I have a system that I changed the display settings for the monitor.
right click desktop
properities
display properities screen
select settings
changed display to 1024x768
I apply the new settings,
click ok.
reboot the system and the old sewttings return.

Where do I need to go to change the default display settings to 1024x768

consolation to tell you I have the same problem and looking for help.
