Display properties problem color not correct

I have a friend of mine who has the following system;
P4 1.6 Gig Celeron
256Megs Mem
Motherboard unknown right now
Video card is Gforce MMX440 running 32bits and 1024X768
Monitor is a good Panasonic 21" which works fine
WinXP Professional eddition , not SP2 yet

About a month aga, the 21" Panasonic was added because she does a lot
photographic works and requires very good color balance and accuracy. It
worked fine when all done with those settings in photography applications.

Then last week she tried installing a scanner USB type, she had a real hrd
time with it and finally aborted that install. but now when she boots the
monitor has fine colors but when Win XP finalizes the boot we can see on
the screen a dratical change in intensity and the color gets faded down.
Like a darker blue will become a puplish type of color etc.

She really requires fine color color control and accuracy for her work.
I have tried many things in the windows properties but it does seems to
change anything.

I don't think that the Video card is at fault, it could be the way Win XP
works with that video card and memory allocation.

What are your views on this?
What would be a good troubleshooting procedure?

I was thinking of removing that video card, install another one then install
the original card again to see if this cures the problems.

You can attach up to 127 USB peripherals to your PC depending on the power
(watts). I doubt that the scanner messed it up, but I do think that the
accompanying application did. The best way to install the scanner is to
turn the
PC off, plug in the USB scanner, boot and let XP's "plug&play" feature find
it and tell
you that "new hardware was found" and ask you if you want to install it,
answer
Yes, and it will either install or XP will ask you to insert the
installation disk. You
must first delete any references to the previous aborted installation. Then
install the graphics application that came with the scanner. You may want
to try
a Restore back before you "messed" it up. You can go back up to 90 days but
that
will also delete any files that have been installed during the time period.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. :~)

STOP.

Do not just plug in any USB device and expect XP to install the drivers.
You must follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly anytime you are
installing any device. Most USB devices require you to install the software
on the computer first before plugging in the USB device. This is true for
scanners, printers, cameras and the occasional card reader.

Most USB device failures are a direct result of attempting to use the "plug
& play" device install as you have told Aslander.

Aslaner, you will have to uninstall all the references to the scanner in
Device Manager. Once this is done, reboot the computer THEN follow the
instructions of the device manufacturer to reinstall the scanner.

The monitor is not the problem. The problem may have been caused by the
scanner's program and you may have to reinstall the monitor's driver after
the scanner is installed and functional.
