display problem

somehow within the last week my display has become very
muddy - like is was smeared with gray streaks - all the
color is muted and if I try to change the resolution it
goes to black & white prior to applying the change. I
have run every diagnostic I can think of everything -
comes up as working normally - I checked my monitor - it
is fine - perhaps my GeForce256 graphics card is
failing? any way to tell? if this is a software problem,
any ideas on how to correct? - this happened suddenly to
my kids, did not see it happen only the aftremath.

Try your computer with another monitor. Is the picture good? Then your old
monitor needs to be replaced. Is the picture still bad? Restart the computer
in Safe Mode. Picture good now? Then upgrade to the latest driver for your
video card. Picture still bad? Time for a new video card. The old one likely
overheated.
