Display problem: Resolution not fitting monitor size (?)

This problem developped just tonight. I'm on a custom-built ACPI
Uniprocessor PC, running Windows XP Home Edition (2002) Service Pack 2. I've
got a Memorex flat screen digital monitor. The computer has been running
smoothly with said monitor for some time now, and I do not think the problem
is the monitor so much as the OS.

The problem is this: Upon start-up, my background was not filling up the
entire screen, it was shrunk and centered with black filling the gaps to the
edge of the screeen. My shortcuts were "gone". Come to find out, my shortcuts
were there, but they were way off the left side of the screen.... I had to
fish my mouse in there and try to pull them out. I've tried adjusting my
resolution both bigger and smaller to no effect other than to make the
background image bigger or smaller and probably move where the icons are (but
not enough to put them in sight). Any window I open is opening far to the
left of my visible space, yet my "Start" button and taskbar are in place, so
my monitor is correctly calibrated. The problem remains, however, that my
back ground is too big for my screen and anything I try to open is popping up
out of my vision space.

A few points of note which may or may not matter: I live in Florida, the
hurricane has knocked out my power and I am operating on a power generator.
which has proved problemless for the past few days. I believe the program
'World of Warcraft' (a game which takes up the full screen un-windowed) may
have been operating at the time of the problem.

Somebody please help me! >.< This is a miserable situation, I greatly
appreciate it.

Is it possible that something has been reset on your monitor, so that
you should use the monitor's own hardware controls to set appropriate
size and location of the displayed image?

No, I've tried recalibrating my monitor, and it hasn't helped... because my
entire bottom taskbar is in the correct space, it's the area above the
taskbar that is problematic. I'm 99.9% sure the monitor is not the problem,
but thanks

Any file, icon, program window can be moved off the screen, it doesn't mean
the workspace
is larger.
Have you tried right clicking and choosing "Arrange Icons by ..."

Since you can move your mouse off the screen, it sounds like your system
thinks
you're using a multi monitor setup, and may be set to have your desktop span
both monitors.
TV Tuners may be detected as secondary monitors.
Enter your Display Properties applet and set your monitors to "Clone"
instead
and uncheck any options that refere to desktop or window spanning,
unless enabling them prevents spanning.
