Display/Monitor annoyance

Have new hp computer with on-board graphics (i.e. no
separate graphics card) and a flat screen monitor (also
hp). xp does not "recognise" the monitor (in System
Info/Display there is nothing) although it currently seems
to work fine. In Control Panel/Display/Settings it
indicates "Default Monitor". On the Advanced/Monitor tab
it also says "efault monitor" with the properties button
greyed out. On the Advanced/Adopter tab is says "VgaSave"
and the driver details are greyed out. How can I get the
system to recognise the monitor?
I have tried installing the drivers for the monitor
using "Add Hardare" ... "Have disc" and pointing the
wizard at the inf file for the monitor only to be then
told that this this is not a driver for any equipment on
my system!
The CD with the monitor has some software for installing
the necessary files but this does not appear to do
anything useful.
What happens if I stop the "service" for the monitor? Is
it worth using another monitor to try to invoke plug&play?
Can I do any more if I safe start xp?
Any thoughts/ideas would be greatfully received - I don't
like being "told" that I am trying to install equipment
which is not attached to my system when it is - I'm
reading the message on it!

Hi,

Since it is a new PC from HP, why not call HP for clarification?
