Display has gotten ugly - in a sci-fi sort of way

My display has a problem displaying graphics all the sudden. For example,
using any imaging software for pics or videos, images of people look like
special effect nightmares. Most skin tones look almost normal, blonde hair
looks normal, but dark hair is rendered as highlight areas (white to bright
pastel grey tones with a coarser sort of pixely texture) and flickering
edges between the areas of the picture that look normal and the areas that
are affected. Moderate shadows are affected , but not dark blacks. In
photography I think the effect is called "solarized." My desktop background
theme is also affected.
As I type this, the print is also affected, over all looking a little faint
with parts of letters dropping out. If I highlight type, the normal dark
blue highlighting has been replaced by fine black and white verticle
stripes.

I have an ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 7500 card which the device manager says is
working
properly. Is this possibly an issue with my flat panel monitor? a software
issue ? an issue with the recent Windows update?

This system, AMD Athlon 1.83GHz running ms-XP, has worked trouble free for
at
least a couple years and has up to date Nortons anti-virus.

This sounds like a hardware signal issue to me. Check the cable from monitor
to computer is firmly inserted at each end.

It sounds like a probable hardware failure, most likely the video board. I
suggest installing the latest video driver as the first step to eliminate
that possible cause. If that doesn't help (it probably won't) test the
monitor on another computer if possible. The fact that device manager shows
no problem with the display adaptor by no means rules it out. Windows may
be able to communicate fine with the board but cannot detect problems on the
output and rendering side.

I checked the cords and dl'ed the new drivers from Radeon and NVIDIA and it
didn't help. I also tried disabling the ALL-IN-WONDER card in the device
manager and the problem was still there with it disabled. I'll try the
monitor on another computer this weekend.
