Display a document simultaneously with the Logon dialog in Win2000?

Richard

Hi,

I've just set up a Win2000 Pro/SP4 computer I'm loaning to my grandson.
I like to display some text reminding him what his UserID and password
are, how to change his password, and how to get rid of this display on
subsequent boot-ups. I logon as Administrator. I've made his UserID a
member of Power Users.

Can this be done?

Richard

Dont think so
Since it would appear the sys is not going to be accessible to others why
not use a simple password, eg combination of his birthday - 070506 - or why
bother with a user password?
Anyone with nunce can overcome it anyway

You could try telling him what his username and password is and then
place a word document in the STARTUP folder of windows, and then it will
load when he logs in, then you can always give him instructions on how
to remove that along with other info.

Its a thought

there is a registry entry call legal notice which allows you to pop up a
message before logon.

You can find this under local security policy and the policy called
"interactive logon: message text for users attempting to logon" You can even
set the message header. This is global so all users will get this message.

Hi Joshua,

Your response is exactly what I was hoping to find. But I've been
searching the Registry for the key you recommended, to no avail. Any
chance you can tell me which hive its in, or even better, the precise
key?

Thanks for getting me this far. An additional "nudge" would be greatly
appreciated. In the meantime, I'll keep searching.

Best wishes,
Richard

Hi DL,
Dont think so

See Joshua's response on how it could probably be done
Since it would appear the sys is not going to be accessible to others

On the contrary, he's got an older brother who'd like to meddle in his
affairs.
why bother with a user password?

I don't think his teenage brother will be able to crack it. He's not
that computer-savy.

Finally, I'd like to do it the way I proposed because I occasionally
encounter business situations where this will be useful, e.g. to tell
people to call me if they have trouble logging on.

Richard

Hi again, Joshua

Here's the closest I've gotten:

Key Name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\Reg
Values\MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System/LegalNoticeCaption:

Value Name:
DisplayName

Value Data:
Interactive logon: Message title for users attempting to log on

Is this relevant? If so, what to do with it? Merely replacing the
text in the Data isn't sufficient, since that text doesn't appear on
the screen when the system boots up.

Richard

Did the last part of my post fail to show?

"You can find this under local security policy"

No reg hack required like in NT days to accomplish this. Just use the GUI.
Control panel/admin tools/local security Policy and the setting I pointed
you to

No, it was displayed. I just didn't understand it well.

That's what I didn't understand. I think I'm a hacker at heart,
but often it's hard to find the correct hack. Using the Control
Panel is far less painful, certainly in this case.

I'm "good to go!" Many thanks for your extra guidance.

Best wishes,
Richard
