Diskdefragmenter indicates some files could not be defragmented

I ran into an odd disk defragmentation message, as I had defragmented my
physical harddisk 2, (D:) which is only a backup drive. The disk defragmenter
indicates after disk defragmentation that "some files could not be
defragmented" and advise me to view the report. In the report there is NO
files listed. It is empty! I have a Win XP Pro computer only 6 months old,
and have done regular maintenance on it.
This is the first time I get this odd message and only on harddisk 2 (D)
which is not the system drive (which is C:) No changes has been made to disk
2 and no strange files have been added. The message came out of the blue and
I would like to know how I can correct this wrong published message. I do not
get this message defragmenting the system disk (C) - what do I do?
Thanks, Anders

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and
"Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to
scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the
box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. Next in
Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected and then select
View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and
Free Space.

Try running Disk Defragmenter on your D drive again.

Disk Defragmenter provides a "Most fragmented files" list. When a fragmented
file is larger than the largest pocket of free space available then the
files is not
fragmented. Running Disk Defragmenter a second or third time does move
files around and can reduce / eliminate the contents of the "Most fragmented
files" list. The more free space on the drive / partition, the more likely
it is that
all fragments will be eliminated.

The MFT table is often in two or three fragments. This will show in the
Report as
one fragmented folder but not be listed. How many folders are shown as
fragmented.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry.

Your advice did not solve the issue. I then moved folder by folder from my
backup drive to the main drive (as I have plenty of room on both HD's) and
having nothing left on the D drive (backup drive) I did another defrag. Same
problem. I moved things back on the backup drive and then woops, no problem
upon defragging. I later discovered some indicated corrupt Outlook.pst backup
files, which I had to remove as Outlook could not open these (not being
read-only!). It seems the problem is solved, but what precisely caused it, I
cant say for sure. Anyway, thanks for your time and support. Very appreciated!
Best regards, Anders

You do not say how many fragments were indicated in the Report and how many
related to MFT before you resolved the problem. I was trying to see whether
you
were on a wild goose chase. Obviously not.

Still glad your problem is sorted.

Gerry.

Sorry, I lost track of this info in the middle of the battle. Here are some
details from the defrag report, I copied to Notepad.

Volume Jette2 (D:)
Volume size = 149 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 9,08 GB
Free space = 140 GB
Percent free space = 93 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 0 %
File fragmentation = 0 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 2.697
Average file size = 4 MB
Total fragmented files = 1
Total excess fragments = 1
Average fragments per file = 1,00

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 0 bytes
Total fragments = 0

Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 135
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 3 MB
MFT record count = 2.847
Percent MFT in use = 88 %
Total MFT fragments = 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented
None

This is in my eyes in contradiction to the initial Report the
Defragmentation Service publish from where you can press OK/Cancel to view
the Report.
However, it is still a mystery to me what caused the problem....
