Disk space not freed up after a file deletion

Matthew Todman

Hi,
I'm having a problem that's frustrating the heck out of me.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Norton's System works 2004 with a bunch of
other stuff (MS Office, DVD tools, etc).. The problem that I'm having is
that when I delete a file (shift - del so that it's really deleted), the
disk space use by that file is not being recovered.
For example, I am in the process of backing up my DVD's (yes, I know it may
not be entirely legal). After I've finished, I delete the .iso file (4.7 Gb
worth), but Windows does not free the space up.
When I use Norton's to show me where the disk space is being used, there
seems to be a black hole of about 40Gb. I have a 120Gb disk. Norton's says
that I'm only using 30Gb, but Windows says I'm using 70Gb.
Is there some sort of disk space eating virus out there?????????
Can someone please help me?
Many thanks
Matt

Matthew;
Reboot.
Be sure to empty the recycle bin.
Do you have Norton Protected Recycle Bin?
When I had it, I disabled it because once I was sure I did not want
it, it went to the recycle bin.
If there was any question, it went somewhere else.

Have you got Norton's Protected Recycle Bin enabled? If so doing a
shift delete does *not* bypass that and as far as the system goes the
files are still around taking space.
