"Disk read error occurred" during startup

My Mother has Windows XP Home edition and while booting up
her computer, she recieved this message, "Disk read error
occurred during startup". The boot up freezes while still
in bios and instructs her to press c-a-del to reboot
computer. However this cycle just repeates itself each
time she tries to reboot the system. She can't get into
safe mode or even boot to the xp cd-rom ( it says the same
thing).

Help!!????..... :-(
Thanks,
Bob Slay

This is a long shot... although not uncommon....

Is there a floppy disk in the A: drive? Or a non-system CD in the CD-ROM?

Good luck,

No The only disk that was put into the cd-rom drive was
Win XP Home.

I was thinking that maybe the HD crashed and burned...

Hi Bob,

Sadly, it might have..... I was just trying to test a simple (as well as
painless, and free) solution.

If you *do* boot with the XP Home CD, does it recognize the drive? (Make
your it looks for CD-Rom before HD when booting)
You may be able to do a Repait installation (not a RE-installation... but
Repair).

If the CD-ROM boot doesn't see the hard drive, than you may well have a
goner.

Very good luck to you,
