Disk perfomance

I am in a loop. I tried to defrag Drive C, it told me it could not because a
Check Disk was due to run, I rebooted to let the check disk run but Xp says
it can't check the disk because it can't access the volume. Everything seems
normal, no apparent disk damage but I can't get out of this loop. Any ideas
guys - please? Hombre

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 can cause the problem.

Chkdsk.exe or ScanDisk fails to run on Windows XP or Windows 2003 after
installing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

A really old version of ZoneAlarm (a version from 2004) can cause the
problem.

BitDefender Internet Security 9 can cause the problem.

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

The /x switch doesn't work if Spyware Doctor is installed. Spyware Doctor
needs to be uninstalled or you can do this...

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:

like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if
necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes
the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors on the disk.

When it loops like that,fails,or keeps running a CHKDSK at start up and youre
cmds fail,then you need to open cmd,type:CHKNTFS /? Gets you the cmds
or syntex on all the disk utilitys to run on,in otherwords,CHKDSK would now
run as CHKNTFS

Fantastic - problem solved. I turned off Spyware Doctor and Norton and then
ran chkdsk c:/x from the cmnd line and then the system faithfully did a
chkdsk and defrag. Thank you very much Wesley

You ought to check with PCTools, Spyware Doctor and see if they have this
fixed yet.
