I am running XP Pro and sometimes when I go to restart my
computer I get an Disk I/O error, replace and press any
key to continue. When I hit CTRL ALT Delete it then boots
back into Windows.
Why does this happen

Sounds like your Hard Drive is about to go tits up!
Burn all personal files, docs, pictures ,ect to CD
and replaced drive. If you get a new drive before
the old one quits, install the new one as master
and your old one as slave and image the old
drive to the new.

Backup up your data from that drive. Download a diagnostic utility from
the web site for the drive manufacturer. This will create a boot floppy
which you boot from and run the diagnostics on the drive. It may be
failing.
