Disk full

i am getting a full c drive message on a 20gb drive laptop. all my music and
personal files are on a different drive. All that is on this on is operating
system and software. I have deleted all unneeded software and deleted temp
files. I have run disk cleaner and cc cleaner. Most of the space 70% is taken
up by a huge c:\windows folder but I have no idea what I can delete from this
folder. Can anyone give me any advice?

So just how big IS your C:\Windows folder?
Mine is just on 3GB and that's with SP2 and fully patched. I can't see that
yours would be anything much bigger than that....

You need to provide specific information. What size are the partitions on
the hard drive? How full are those partitions? How big is the Windows
folder?

yes,

music files can consume
a lot (A LOT) of space.

it is likely possible that
your 20 gig harddrive is
a bit small by now and
if it is a "fat32" then
it is not as "ntfs"

try checking out the temp
directory in the windows
folder and delete those files.

a couple of commands that
might help are cleanmgr and
chkdsk and defrag.

It is 11GB

So just how big IS your C:\Windows folder?
Mine is just on 3GB and that's with SP2 and fully patched. I can't see that
yours would be anything much bigger than that....

If you double click My Computer, each partition's size and the amount of
free space left is listed under Hard Disk Drives (MS continues to call a
partition a drive and it is not a hard disk drive).

11 GB is pretty big for Windows--my entire C: partition is 12.7 GB. You can
right click each folder within Windows, select properties and that will tell
you the size and amount of files in that folder. For individual files
located in the Windows folder, use the detailed view and sort on size. This
should give you an idea of where and what is taking up so much room.

11Gb is ENORMOUS for the Windows Folder - even with SP2 and all patches mine
is only 3GB - so I don't know what on earth the OP has in there....

A basic point in this discussion is that a few years
ago 20 GBy was relatively small; now it's truly
tiny. Economical replacement with a bigger
drive might be a solution simpler than some.

make it ELEVEN GB!

My Windows folder is about 3 GB also and I too am curious as to what is
going on with OP's folder. Hopefully he will be able to tell us by using my
suggestion.

Thanks Ron - despite Explorer saying this is the space usage on the drive,
when I look at each file and folder in c:/windows and add them up it only
accounts for about 25% of the actual space usage. i assume there are hidden
foles/folder in there I can't see. I have clicked on each of the 30 folders
and added their size into a spreadsheet. The biggest user of the space it is
showing me is SYSTEM32 which account for about half the drive space that is
showing. Does this make any sense? Should the folders in c:/windows add up to
the size that explorer tells me that folder is?

On the Explorer tool bar, click on Tools, Folder Options, View tab:

Remove the mark from: Do not show..., Hide extensions..., and Hide
protected.... Add a mark to: Show hidden....

This will allow you to see all the files.

Your system32 folder will be large as it contains system files. Mine runs
right at 900 mb.

More than half the drive space is taken up in C/windows/installer. Most if
it is 6gb of Windows installer patches (msp). According to the details more
the 4 GB of Patches were installed 8/8/2005 and they are all exactly the same
size, about 100MB. Can I do anything about these?

knowledge about them. To give you perspective, my Installer folder contains
391 files that take up 818 mb. I only have two files that exceed 20 mb:
one is 54 and the other is 95 mb. I would be very suspicious of files that
are the same large size that were installed on the same date. MS has a
tool you can download: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 I downloaded
it and it identifies what the patches are so maybe it will be helpful.

The files referenced in your other post are system restore files. You can
limit how much space these files can consume; however, by doing so, you
might make unavailable a restore point that could be needed. For more info,
right click My Computer and select properties and then click the system
restore tab.
