External Hard Drive (2)

Housekeeping on external hard drive.

I can right click in explorer and AVG scan
my son's external hard drive (E:) for Viruses and Trojans.

How about CC Cleaner, Adaware and Spybot?
I presume I need the paid, professional versions
of these software programs to employ them?

With CC Cleaner, whilst in C:\ drive,
it appeared to have found 3Gb of analysed data
that could be removed, which obviously was
including the E drive, but I wasn't game to
invoke the clean.
Comments?

You dont need paid for versions of any of the programs you mention in order
to use them
Use CCleaner for temp files only, not the registry functions

Cheers DL.
roger that, but it is not apparent to me, one can
isolate E drive anywhere, and carry out the invocation.
It seems to me I can only begin the processes via my C drive,
I'd like to say open Adaware, select E drive and then scan only that drive.
How does one do that please?
Thanks thus far.

It appears that sometime after the last time I used Ad-Aware and the
current version, Lavasoft decided to make the ability to select which
files and folders to scan available only in the paid-for version.

Use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware instead:

Thanks Lem :)
my perplexity has been requited.

I'd certainly like to solve the CC cleaner one too,
I am very fond of that program, in cleaning the gunk
temp files [only]

CCleaner works in a somewhat different way. Rather than looking at all
files in order to determine is a file is "bad," CCleaner knows where
Windows and various other applications keep files than can be [more or
less] safely deleted. On the main screen (when you click the "Cleaner"
(brush) icon), click the "Windows" tab to see the places relevant to
Windows that will be cleaned or the "Applications" tab to see the same
for various apps you have installed.

If you determine that CCleaner is focusing on some files that you know
you don't want to delete (for example, by looking at the results of
clicking on the "Analyze" button), click on "Options" then "Exclude" and
add the files and/or folders that you want to exclude. After you do
this, go back to the "Cleaner" (brush) menu and make sure that the box
is checked next to "Custom Files and Folders" (second line from the bottom).

There's online help for CCleaner. Click the link.
