disk defragmenter

hello to everyone, this is my first time posting. i have windows vista basic
and my computer has ben getting slow so i started to do a disk defragment,
but it stardted about 9:00pm lastnight till about 9:15dis morning, i found
it odd that it was still runing so i canceled it because i thought it wasnt
working but my problem now is that i cant see my desktop icons. i found the
desk top file folder and i just tried to drag the icons to my desktop but it
wouldnt work, and when i search for desktop in (computer) this is exactly
what it seys.

c:/windows/system32/config/systemprofile/desktop refers to a location that
is unavailable. it could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a
network. chek to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you
are conected to the internet or your network, and try again. if it still
cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different
location.

another thing that happened along with that is everything went into classic
view and i cant find a way to change it back to how i had it, becuse i
searched through control panel and found nothing, what should i be looking
for to change it? does enyone think this happened because i canceled the
disk defragmenter process and should i start it again? sorry this was so
long but i tried to explaine it the best i can. can some one please
please help me with this? thanx a mill.

Defrag can be halted with no damage at any time, by design. You are seeing
some kind of disk corruption. Running Error Checking is the first step:
Rightclick drive icon in Explorer, Properties, Tools tab, Error Check
There are also disk diagnostic apps available for download from the maker of
your drive.
After any possible repair of the drive, you can try running System Restore,
or one of your available repair options on the F8 menu, (pressed during
restart) It's also possible you will need to create a new user ID, and copy
the old settings over.
