For some stupid reason I have managed to delete windows disk defragger from
the accessories......... I thought it was only a short cut as I was
re-organising everything.

Can anyone tell me how to put it back without a restore as everything is
just nicely ticking over?

I have disk-keeper on my pc which is just fine........ just annoyed that I
did such a stupid thing!

If you right click on a drive, say the C drive, and go to
Properties/Tools, is the defrag there?

Undelete it from your recycle bin.

it is there....... but if i click on disk defragmenter it goes straight to
diskeeper and not windows one......... is it simply file association?

%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc

Just create a shortcut.

The dialog starts what is listed here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\DefragPath

Try this: Run a search for dfrg.inf. This file should be in your Windows
..inf folder. If your search does not find it, then you need to go to Folder
Options>View Tab> and put a dot in Show hidden files and folders and click
on Apply. Now when you run search for dfrg.inf it should find it. Right
click on the file and scroll to Install and click on it. This hopefully will
resolve your problem.

Hi tks for trying but that didnt work either.........

the dot is in the hidden files tab and still it doesnt show/find that inf
file.....

any other ideas?? :-(

Go back and double check your Folder options to be sure that you have a
check in "Show hidden files and folders". I assume that you are running
Windows XP and if so you should have the file dfrg.inf installed on your
computer. Run a search again for dfrg.inf and when you click on All Files
and Folders look down below and also click on More Advanced Options and be
sure that you have a check the first three items listed including "Search
hidden files and folders". Now it should appear, so right click on the file
dfrg.inf and then click on install.

Advise accordingly.

Hi ColTom.......

The second way worked and it was found and installed ok.

It now appears within the accessories folder again, but disk keeper is still
overriding the windows defrag utility........ I have no problem with that but
for future reference how can I have both available if I so wish? Without
removing disk keeper as it is a very good program.

Many thanks for your knowledge and help

Hi:

Glad that you have your defrag back. I am unfamiliar with Disk Keeper, but
there should be some way to disable without removing. Is it loading on
Startup? Go to Start>Run>enter msconfig>Startup Tab>now look and see if disk
keeper is listed. You might have to expand the Command with your cursor to
identify. If listed remove the check and click on Apply then OK to reboot.

This was exactly the repair I was looking for.

I had installed Diskeeper on a free trial basis, but couldn't afford to buy
it when the trial ran out several weeks back so I uninstalled it. I decided
I needed to defrag yesterday and discovered that my defrag shortcut was gone.
I think Diskeeper is so aggressive that it tries to take the place of the
Windows Defragger, and when I deleted it, it took the shortcut to the Windows
Defragger with it. I've heard a lot of good things about Diskeeper, but I am
not happy with what happened when I uninstalled it.

Anyway, thanks for posting the way to reinstall the original shortcut to the
Windows Defragger.
