"Disk Defragmenter could not start"

When I try to run disk defragmenter using either the analyze option or the defragment option, for either of my 2 drives I get the message "Disk Defragmenter could not start" in a pop up. I've tried restarting, updating windows, closing all programs, and I am the admin of my computer. Could some one please tell me what I should do? By the way, I have been able to defragment my hard drive before. This is the first time this has happened.

Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53 GHz)
512MB RAM
80GB HD

Are you getting a specific error message? Did you try rebooting into safe
mode and try to defrag again?

That is the message, "Disk Defragmenter could not start". Yes, it does work when I go into Safe Mode and defrag. I just want to make it more convenient and be able to defrag on my own user name. I used to be able to. My guess is that Windows Update made a faulty update that messed up my administrator power.
