Disk Cleanup

My disk cleanup is not working properly. When I try to run it, it freezes while "scanning: compress old files". When I cancel, my system will hardly respond. I have to log-off and log back on for my system to run properly. I have stopped all unnecessary startup files. I have manually cleaned out all temporary internet folders. I don't know what else to do.
