Disk Cleanup

When trying to clean-up Drive C: (40 GB with 21 GB free),
Disk Cleanup works and works with no results. I've had it
on for as much as 55 minutes. No results! Another time
after 35 minutes the computer restarted. No results! I've
run a full Chkdsk twice. No problems! I've run an up-to-
date virus scan. No problems! Even after
pressing "Cancel" Cleanmgr.exe continues to show in Task
Manager as a working process. It works on Drive E:, my
back-up hard drive (40 GB with 34 GB free), no problem.
Anyone have any answers short of a non-destructive
recovery?

Yes. Start Regedit and delete this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
VolumeCaches\CompressOldFiles.

Thanks, Kelly! Appreciate your help. Especially like the
possibilities on your site. I downloaded a couple, but my
old mind (near 73) couldn't find and figure out "Save the
REG file". I'll probably go back there and look some more.
Thanks again!

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

The difference between my advice and Kelly's is that she has cleverly
packaged the registry edit so that newcomers to the registry can't mess
it up. It's the same edit. Whatever way you went, I'm glad you're
happy! Happy Holidays back at you.
