Disk Cleanup

My home edition xp has begun to run very slow and
sometimes do not respond. I started Disk Cleanup and it
has been on for over 24 hours and it has not stopped
yet. Is this normal. And will this enhance the
performance of my computer when it is done. How can I
tell if it is doing what it is supposed to do?

Im having the same results with , clean up , when it runs it uses 99 percent
of my pc and stops all other programs running properly , it will not finish
the disk clean job , can anyone help ?/ with thanks theoap.

It's just hung up trying to compress old files. Shut it down.
