Disk cleanup

Can anybody help??

I have encountered a problem with disk cleanup. When
selected the box appears with three green progress lights
lit and function. Scanning: 'compressing old files.' The
action does not progress any further, longest I've waited
is 4 hours. I have Norton Anti- virus and utilities
running in the back ground. Any help will be much
appriciated.
