disk cleanup tool

My disk cleanup has stopped working.
When activated, the hard drive thrashes away for about 25
to 30 seconds, whilst working on the 'compress files' part
of the process.
The hard drive activitry then slows and all I can see is a
flash of the drive lamp about once every second or so.
I have left it working at this for about an hour but it
never gets onto the next stage of the process, past the
compress files legend.I have carried out the suggested
actions on KB article 823302 but it has not corrected the
problem.
Any suggestions please??
