disk cleanup not working

when i click on disk cleanup it runs as usual but it
stays the same way for ever if i would let it. It says
the usual thing: Disk cleanup is calculating how much
space you will be able to free on (C:) Scanning:
Compress old files. Then it says it is calculating. I
know this part is normal but it will stay like that until
i stop it; therefore i haven't been able to do a disk
cleanup for quite awhile. Does anyone know what the
problem may be? Thank you

I did this not becuase Disk Cleanup was hanging, but Disk Cleanup is its
soooooooo much quicker without scanning for old files to compress.
