Disk cleanup doesn't work

I have windows 2000, 1.1 celeron, 256k ram, 80g
harddrive. My disk cleaup used to work fine, now it comes
up, sometimes says compressing files, sometimes
calculating. The platters don't make the noise they use to
when it starts. My screen saver slows down to a crawl and
my taskbar disappears after a few minutes.
