Disk Cleanup doesn't work

Using W2K with service pack 4. When I run disk cleanup, it
stays on scanning compressed files. I have waited as long
as 25 mintues with no change. I only have about 4G of
files on my hard drive. What is going on?
 
What I'd like to know is why/how do these incorrect registry entries get
in there in the first place?
