Disk Cleanup does not allow any items to be checked

My XP Home system is at the latest maintenenace level and performs most all functions without a problem
However when I do a Start--> All Programs--> Accessories--> System Tools--> Disk Cleanup, the window showing the
files to be cleaned in each area pops up almost immediately (with substantial megs of disk space eligible to be cleaned ) and the boxes at the left are UNchecked. They are "greyed out" and I cannot check them to clean any of the areas (Temporary Internet Files e.g.)
Most all other functions (Disk Defragmenter, e.g.) work o.k. Any ideas what happened..or how I can repair..?

Skylane, you could try Easy Cleaner and see if it performs that function.
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ And if you have a
WinXP CD go to Start>Run type: sfc /scannow
and have the winxp cd in the cdrom drive.
