DISK CLEANUP -- COMPUTER FREEZES DURING FILE COMPRESSION

L

Lindsay Graham

I'm using Win XP Home. If I do Disk Cleanup without the "Compress old
files" option, it works fine. As soon as I try to use "Compress old files",
it appears to start doing the compression and then the computer freezes up
completely (even Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work). Any ideas ion what might be
causing this?

I've tried the workaround suggested in Microsoft KB812248, but all that
seems to do is remove the Compress Old Files option permanently!

I've researched this problem in the archives of this newsgroup, but cannot
see anything definitive. I saw posts from several people who recommend not
using this option in Disk Cleanup, but I'm not sure why. Should I persevere
or not use it at all?

Thanks, Will. I had seen that facility on the Kellys-Korner site when I was
searching earlier, but there was insufficient information for me to have
confidence in trying it. But I've now done so to no avail. The fix at line
48 appears to put the Compress Old Files command back into the Registry, but
I executed it and nothing was added back to the Registry and the option was
not in the Disk Cleanup suite.

So I then added back the Registry commands removed using Microsoft KB812248
(see original post below) and they did re-appear in the Registry and in Disk
Cleanup. But doing a Disk Cleanup with only the Compress Old Files option
selected once again resulted in a computer freeze.

Any other suggestions, anyone?

There is no solution except time. Try again in a year's time and it may work.

Hi Lindsay
Now this is a very, very long-shot and is only from personal experience.
With a previous system, 18 months ago, PIII (don't laugh please)with WIN
2000, my local computer shop, recommended that I disabled my Antivirus,
which I had just added a few weeks before.
He told me to go into Task Manager and see what was running at the same time
as Disk Cleanup. I did and found it was going bananas. Disabled it and
Cleanup, followed by Defrag ran OK.
Even Task Manager would freeze on screen - had to pull the plug out to
switch off.
Good luck
