Get Crap Cleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and it will truly clean
your machine of temp files, including Fire Fox/Mozilla cookies. It is
also configurable to NOT delete cookies you may want to save.

Alias,
Thanks for your reply.
It does not answer my question.
Using a program that's part of the OS,
WinXp Home Sp2, and it didn't do what It's supposed to.
I recently upgraded my system which I thought was operating correctly to my
amazement was slow as molasses, now I tend to be hesitant about doing
addons. Thanks again for your reply.

Crap Cleaner is not an add on but a program that works much better than
the built-in XP Clean Up. If I were you, I would download Crap Cleaner,
run it and then do a defrag. I would also check the Start Up tab in
MSCONFIG to see what's loading up with Windows that may be running in
the background and using up your computer's resources.

What you don't want to mess with in Crap Cleaner is the Issues feature.
Leave that alone.

Your problem with Disk CleanUp may be that you
may need to run it in more than one User Profile
if you have more than user of the computer with their
own Log On.

However, Disk CleanUp is not so effective as cCleaner.
With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. I invariably
recommend creating a restore point before using cCleaner.
cCleaner also offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking before
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.
You do get a warning but this one has irritating consequences.

Downloaded Program Files, there may still be files there that you may need.

Downloaded Program Files
[[Downloaded Program Files are ActiveX controls and Java applets downloaded
automatically from the Internet when you view certain pages. They are
temporarily stored in the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard
disk.]]

%windir%\Downloaded Program Files

Temporary Internet Files, Disk Cleanup doesn't clean them all.

Disk cleanup will clean:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

Disk cleanup will not clean:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

To delete *all* of your Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | Click OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop
Or Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files. Also close OE.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box: Delete all offline content {This cleans >>
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
AND
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)}
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
6) You can also click on the Clear History button to empty your History
folder.

Note: If you do NOT select the Delete all offline content box, not
everything will be cleaned out.

Content.IE5 is a hidden system folder.

Have been reading this thread and noticed your instruction for deleting
Temporary Internet Files . I am new to XP and I always followed your
procedure in Win 98 . However I have found in my XP Home SP2 . I do not get
a box come up "Delete all offline content" when I click Delete Files . All I
get is the box that allows me to delete TIF , Cookies History etc.
Just wondered if I am missing something ??

Thanks for your reply Wesley Vogel.

I am a bit surprised about the function of Disk Cleanup causing some
potential problems especially regarding Downloaded Program files, as I have
read a couple articles in magazines that stated that these files are not
programs installed, therefore removing them would not cause any problems.
safe to say now that the function did not remove these files maybe saved me
a headache down the line.

It is no problem if they are removed and if they are needed again the can be
redownloded.

For exampe, one that I have...
Downloaded Program Files: {02BCC737-B171-4746-94C9-0D8A0B2C0089} (Microsoft
Office Template and Media Control)

If needed again to download any templates from here, a box would pop up
asking you to download Microsoft Office Template and Media Control here...
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/default.aspx

<quote>
Why should I download the Microsoft Office Template and Media Control?

The Clip Art and Media, Templates, and Training Web sites on Microsoft
Office Online use the Microsoft Office Template and Media Control, which is
an ActiveX® control that downloads and opens selected media clips,
templates, and training practice files automatically, in the correct file
format and location.

If you do not download the ActiveX control, you will not be able to
automatically download clip art and media or templates on Office Online, and
you will not be able to do practice sessions in the online training courses
on Office Online.

See the picture of Delete Files dialog in the upper right hand corner?

No, I have the option in Disk Cleanup. However, the poster was asking about
deleting Temp files in *IE Options*.
He says: "I do not get a box come up "Delete all offline content" when I
click Delete Files. All I get is the box that allows me to delete TIF ,
Cookies History etc".

You *were* able to delete offline files in IE6 options but not in IE7.

Ineresting. Thank you, Smirnoff.
