Disk Clean Up, in windows XP

When I try and run disk clean up for drive C

The disk clean up window appears I then select drive C. but nothing happens. As a result my computer starts to slow down. and I have to reboot my compute
I have 768 of Ram with 2.4ghz Pentium 4
