Disk Clean Up Does Not Complete

Operating System: Windows XP
Computer: DELL Dimension 8300 2.8 GHz
Problem Description: (no error message)

(1) Select "Disk Clean Up"
(2) Message: Calculating, "Scanning: Compress Old Files"
(3) >>>> (a)I have let the "Disk Clean Up run for over 30
minutes and it never gets past Message:
Calculating, "Scanning: Compress Old Files", (b) Never
does show the next screen "Disk Clean Up Results"
(4) When I select "Cancel", and try to select "Disk Clean
Up" again.... get a beep, and have to restart the
computer,
(5) When I 1st got the computer in July... this function
worked,

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.

installing zone alarm. Have you installed something
