Hi,
I purchased my son a second hand pc running on Windows xp home edition.
I tried to install Windows xp sp2 on to it but it came up with a message
regarding not enough memory on disk.
I have checked the disks there is a c drive and a d drive.
C drive has 7mb space and D drive has 38 GB.
I am only a basic at computers so I dont know what to do.
It seems as though it wanted to go to c but should have gone to d.
Any help solving this would be most appreciated.

You don't have enough disk space on the C drive:

Is that a typo? (7 mb)

I am not 100% sure what you are trying to do. Are you patching the
existing WinXP to SP2 via Windows Update?

Hi,
I was told last week by someone on this site to download sp2 on to my sons
pc and that is what I am trying to do.
As every time I try and put the new internet explorer and windows media
player on his pc it keeps coming up saying windows sp2 not installed.

Maybe a bit OT, but in addition to the other replies - if you have a
secondhand PC, it's usually best to flatten it entirely and reinstall
Windows & all programs from scratch. That way you know exactly what you've
got. If you have two partitions on a single drive, you can also remove them
so you have only one, if you wish.

You do not have enough room on your HDD. SP2 is 250MB +/-. You need to get a
larger HDD.

First I really think the message said not enough *space* on disk rather
than not enough *memory*. (***)Before anything else, first determine if you
have 2 drives( c and d) or just one that is partitioned into (c and d).
Then: (1) In either case: can you move some of the larger files from c to d
to make room for the SP2? (2) If 2 separate drives: Maybe someone put the
OS on c and uses the d for applications and manipulation. If there is an OS
on each of two separate drives, read >
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307844 < how to
change and assign and remove a drive letter. (3)If you really have only 1
drive: (which is highly suspect), but partitioned into c and d partitions,
and with the OS on c only, you might use Partition Magic to remove the wall
between c and d and make the drive all one larger disk. Someone else may
know how to do this last move w/o using PM. HTH and good luck, s

I agree with Lanwench. With a used PC it's best to do a clean install of
the OS. That way you don't inherit any of the glitches and possibly other
nasties such as porn.

Letter C: is a partition designation. Letter D: is a partition by virtue of
its size. Both reside on a hard drive. Whether the same physical hard
drive or not remains unknown. The purpose of D:, if any, remains unknown.
The message for C: was more likely in MB or KB, not mb.

Following is not specifically meant for the OP. The term "drive" is used
interchangably in windows as either a partition or a physical hard disk.
Both distinctly different animals. Thank you MS and affiliates. Shoe fits,
wear it. Heck, continue promoting the superfluous term.
