Disk Activity BEFORE Logging on

I generally switch my PC on when I get up, then go off and make a cup
of cofee and come back to complete the log-on when I'm ready.

I have Vista Home Premium - booted via BootitNG.

Very often, when I come back to the machine, the disk is undergoing a
great deal of activity - even though I have not yet entered my
password to Log on.

I do have indexing switched on - but as I haven't actually entered
Vista yet, surely that can't be active??

Obviously as I am not in the O/S yet, I can't do any diagnostic work
such as checking task manager etc.

What on earth can it be doing??

Could be a number of things. It may be defragging your drive in the
background, collecting performance information (eg for the reports you see
in 'Reliability and Performance Monitor'), or Windows Defender running a
spyware scan....

When Windows notices that your computer is idle, then it takes the
opportunity to run a few background tasks for general housekeeping etc.

most services run without someone logged on...

if you like vista get used to hearing and seeing thrashing all the time...

Vista loves to wear down disks!
