Disk activates very frequently - anything to do?

The hard disk on my computer works very frequently. Even when I am not using
the computer, the disk is active with variable intervals – typically 2 to 10
seconds. The computer is running under Windows 2000 (Sorry, I did not find a
better place to pose questions about W-2000!). I have looked up under running
programs when I am not using the computer, but no programs are listed. A lot
of processes are, however, running. Unfortunately, my knowledge does not
permit me to interpret what the different running processes may indicate.

I have checked the disk with F-Secure for virus, and used Ad-Aware and
Spybot S&D to check for spyware and similar threats. Nothing is found. It is
about 950 Mb free space on the disk.

Anything I can do about this?

If it's simply a matter of many process running, than more RAM will
sometimes do the trick. More RAM means Windows doesn't have to swap out to
pagefile as much. But that's just a general recommendation.

You might investigate just what it is that runs at startup and consider
setting them not to start automatically. On some systems, that can make a
big difference.
