strange activity on laptop hard disk

I'd like knowing if it exists tool which permits to find out what
process is reading/writing on hard disk in that time, because when I'M
NOT using the notebook the HD activity led always blinks

You can use the Windows Task Manager. After clicking the Processes tab you
can click the View pull-down menu. Under the Select Columns item you can
tick any of the available disk activity items.

it might be attributed to
indexing.

go to admin tools>services

and disable "indexing" at
least for a while.

another method that you
can use is to compare your
state of "normal mode windows"
to that of the 'safe mode".

if safe mode functions better
then I would likely attribute
the issue you have to a third
party program.

If you enable those columns in TM, they will show you information
about everything that has happened since the last boot time, which may
or may not be useful.

You need to be able to figure out what is happening right now and be
able to watch it.

Download Process Explorer which will reveal processes and information
that are not obvious in Task Manager. You can enable up to 16 I/O
columns, but the most useful one for your issue is going to be the I/O
Delta Total Bytes column.

With that, you will get a real time display of everything that is
running and the Total I/O. You will see exactly what is going on and
be able to make well informed decisions about what to do. There is no
guessing about what it might be or trying things.

I started Win XP of my notebook in safe mode and I noted same
problems: light blinking of hard disk led.
By Process Exlorer I saw some system processes cause this activity
(major part is csrss.exe but also winlogon.exe).
I noted also led is blinking even if there are zero values in "I/O
Delta Total Bytes".
