You probably need Vista drivers for you CD player. Go to the makers site and
search for Vista drivers for your version.

What does a disc have to do with downloading programs? If you have a disc
in your player, go to computer select the CD drive and right click on a file
and select open. You should have a program or more to select from to play
the disc, depending on what is on the disk If not use open with and browse
to a program you have that is for that type of file. Most CD music should
open with Windows media player. Movies you may need a codec or I use Media
Player Classic which has the codecs to play movies.

I suggest you be more clear about what you are describing, including all the
steps you go thru before you post. Does your CD drive even show up in
computer or Computer Management/Disk Management?

Hmmm, downloading programs is done from the internet not a CD.
But if you mean installing programs from a CD, you should be able to do that
by going to My Computer and clicking on the CD Drive then clicking the
installer. Music CDS should play if you start your player and specify the CD
Drive.
If you enable autostart for the CD Drive, the disk should then do what you
expect, start by itself when inserted, instead of manually.
Windows Help & Support can give you the specific instructions.

This is actually a feature, not a bug.

In XP, the "Autorun" feature was enabled. When you inserted a CD-ROM or DVD,
Windows would automatically try to run whatever was on the disc. This was a
nice, convenient feature; but it was also very insecure. If the CD-ROM
contained a virus or other exploit, your system would be infected before you
had a chance to do anything about it. So in Vista, AutoRun has been
disabled. Windows won't start using anything on the disc until you tell it
to.

This shouldn't stop you from using the disc, it just means you need to run
the contents manually. For example if you put a movie DVD in, you run
Windows Media Play, and point it towards your DVD drive. etc. Likewise for
music, etc.

You can turn AutoRun back on by some deep hacking in the Registry but I
don't recommend it, for the security reasons.

A lot of people say that they are downloading files from a CD; it is a
terminology often used.

In *theory*, Vista should be resistant to this attack, because a standard
user cannot write to HKLM Registry keys. But a user'd probably see a "Need
your permission" confirmation dialogue and just click it, like all the
hundreds of others that keep popping up

yes i mean install srry. but when i go to my computer there is no disc icon
or any icon besides local disc c and shared folder. i havnt been able to run
any installation cd's since vista :S

Does the CD drive show up in your BIOS POST, and also does it show in Disk
Management (Computer Management) or Device Manager. I assume it must show
in the BIOS or you wouldn't have been able to install Vista.

Type compu in the start/search box and select Computer Management. In the
left hand panel choose Disk Management and see if it is listed there. The
easiest way to get to device manager is the windows key/pause-break, but
control panel/system and maintenance/system/device manager look under
DVD/CD-ROM drives and if you have none, do you have any 'other devices' that
could be the CD drive.
